Many computer users store data on external drives. There are several reasons for doing this. For example, data backup sets are often stored on externals drives. When you run the defrag diagnostics, the program scans your drive, searching for fragmented files. The results are displayed graphically. Areas and files that need to be defragmented are displayed in red. The defrag program will make a suggestion as to whether the drive needs defragged.
If you choose to defrag the drive, you will be asked to reboot the computer. The routine runs before the computer reboots into the OS, ensuring that no files are in use. Files that are in use cannot be moved, making the process less efficient. Depending on the amount of fragmentation, the process could take hours; therefore you need to run it during a down time.
