About Hitachi

Hitachi, Ltd. is a Japanese, multi-faceted company that was founded in 1910 by an electrical engineer, Namihei Odaira. This company did not come to the United States until 1959 when Hitachi America, Ltd. was established. Unlike some of the companies in the data storage industry, Hitachi is an extremely diverse corporation, with eleven different segments. These segments include Information & Telecommunication Systems, Social Infrastructure, High Functional Materials & Components, Financial Services, Power Systems, Electronic Systems & Equipment, Automotive Systems, Railway & Urban Systems, Digital Media & Consumer Products, Construction Machinery and Other Components & Systems. In 2003, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (HGST) as a merger of IBM and Hitachi were hard disk drive businesses. However, in 2012, Western Digital took over HGST when they purchased it from Hitachi, Ltd. Some popular products within this section of the business include the G-Technology External Drives, Travelstar and Travelstar Thin Laptop Hard Drives, and Ultrastar Desktop, NAS, RAID and Enterprise Hard Drives.
